Santorini

The third island we visited on our Greek holiday was the most spectacular. The island is actually the caldera remaining from a huge eruption about 3500 years ago that destroyed the Minoan civilization. The towns are built on the rim of the standing portions of the crater. This is like a large version of Crater Lake, but with the Mediterranean flooding in through the destroyed areas of the caldera wall.

The town of Fira where we stayed.

View through the door of our room.

View of the sea from the terrace of our room...

...and view of the trail and cable car.

The switchback trail to sea level.

Incredible views every direction.

Narrow streets of the town.

Lots of restaurants and shops.

The nearby town of Oia.

This is a popular place for cruise ships to visit.

Fira at night.

Mules giving rides up and down from the dock.

Red beach at the other end of the island.

View of the sea in the caldera.

View from the cable car.

Our last dinner on Santorini.
